Let’s
take a walk….
To Web sites that can make it fun:
First:
We need to take a look at: “Walking, a step in the right direction,”
from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney
Diseases—NIDDK, at: http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutri/pubs/walking.htm
This publication
provides tips on starting a walking program, warming up, cooling
down, and a sample walking program.
Second:
Getting suited up.
These Web sites describe pedometers and other supplies that walkers
of all age groups may need.
Features that are particularly needed by walkers who have
diabetes are indicated:
- Body
Trends (http://www.bodytrends.com) offers a range of electronic
pedometers with numerous capabilities (calorie counting, stride
measurement, etc.) and other fitness tools (such as fat testers
and gravity boots).
- Yucca
Dune (http://www.shopsite.com/yucca/aisle143.html ) also
offers a range of electronic pedometers and this Web page provides
a table on their many varying features.
These features include built-in FM radio, and an optical
“eye” that, as they describe on the site, determines pulse rate
by “watching” blood flow through the skin placed over it (probably
a great sell for keeping teenagers interested in exercising
while working on a weight loss regime)
