Diabetes, what are the issues in 2004?

  • It's a growing epidemic (with more than 18 million Americans affected so far).

  • It's a complicated disease, affecting every aspect of physical and mental well being.

  • There are a range of tools that can be used to help address diabetes management but, so far, none has proven effective in itself.

That much is known and it's not very heartening. CMS's recent interest in funding demonstration projects for studying care of people living with diabetes and other chronic diseases should uncover specifics about targeting technologies and clinical care that will work over the long term. Telehealth, eventually, may be shown as one potential tool to effect improved care and longer term self management.

Let's learn more about what is working in "telediabetes" to move forward with technology planning and use in this installment of the Home Telehealth Community of Care.
